Championing Inclusion: Walter Pela's Journey Beyond the Boardroom
In the world of corporate leadership and philanthropy, Walter Pela stands as a beacon of advocacy for inclusion. As KPMG Canada's Regional Managing Partner, Walter's dedication to inclusion transcends boardroom discussions, reaching deep into communities, notably through his position on the Pacific Autism Family Network (PAFN) Board of Directors.
Since 2018, Walter has dedicated his time and expertise to PAFN, a commitment rooted in personal experience. As a proud father of two young adults, one of whom is neurodiverse, Walter understands firsthand the challenges and triumphs of navigating life with neurodiversity. It's this personal connection that drives his passion for serving on the PAFN Board, where he contributes a unique perspective and motivation for change.
Walter's journey with PAFN began with the organization’s inception, a natural progression from his desire to make a difference in the lives of individuals and families affected by autism. His dedication earned him a seat on the Board among other like-minded individuals who share a commitment to the organization's mission.
Beyond his role on the Board, Walter is a champion of inclusion in both his professional and personal life. At KPMG, he leads by example, actively promoting inclusion in the workplace. From enthusiastically recruiting neurodiverse talent to providing corporate inclusion training, Walter ensures that KPMG remains at the forefront of fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and supported.
Bernadette Wylie, KPMG Strategic Liaison, speaks to Walter's unwavering commitment to advocacy and inclusion. "Walter uses his role to create connections and start conversations," she says. "He leads by example, both professionally and personally, always striving to do the right thing." Bernadette's testament echoes the sentiments of those who have had the privilege of working alongside Walter, witnessing his dedication to driving positive change and breaking down barriers.
Through his service on the Pacific Autism Family Network Board of Directors and his leadership at KPMG, Walter continues to pave the way for a more inclusive and understanding society —one where neurodiverse individuals are celebrated and empowered to thrive.
